Alexander Brown – 'Textile Revision' Sculpture, 2024
Textile Revision studies how minimal but repetitive intervention and craft labour methods can provoke perceptions of assigned values. When asked to consider recycled aluminium, attention focused on a pragmatic example: the aluminium can. There is a lot to be admired about the aluminium can, including its singular material construction, its recyclable capabilities, and, in a more philosophical sense, its humility as a commonplace object. Interest is further grounded in the simple formwork called upon to gain strength from this fine material (0.11mm thick).
Textile Revision endeavours to expose and celebrate this dichotomy. Parallel to this interest, the aim is to anchor a relationship between established findings derived from previous works of minimal actions alongside industrial products that utilise sympathetic construction principals, such as steel conveyor belts and the repetition of components to make textiles. The final work delivers an abstract revision of these existing industrial products.
